Mobile plans in Switzerland from the most popular operators
In Switzerland, the mobile telephony market is held by 3 operators: Swisscom mobile (which alone has a 58% share), Sunrise UPC and Salt. In addition to these 3 networks, there are a number of secondary networks (Yallo, Wingo, Talk Talk, Lebara to name but a few) with particularly attractive offers. The competition is broad enough to offer special offers and exclusive online subscriptions of all kinds. It’s a great way to save money on your cell phone bill. To help you find your way through the jungle of the Top 1 package Top 2 package Top 3 package Swiss mobile market, we’ve put together a comparison of the services offered by each provider.
Swype, the new mobile operator that’s shaking up the competition
Swype is a very recent mobile operator. It actually belongs to Sunrise, and is based on a concept that has already proved successful in other countries: unlimited calls at low prices, thanks to operational savings such as online-only management of services and the absence of physical stores. Its main package costs 20 francs a month for life, with no commitment, and offers unlimited calls, SMS/MMS and Internet. It is currently the cheapest unlimited package in Switzerland. However, this package is based on the 4G network; to benefit from the 5G network, you need to add an extra 9 francs per month.

Coop Mobile’s Swiss mobile offers
Coop Mobile’s Swiss mobile offers are the result of a collaboration between two Swiss giants: Swisscom and the Coop supermarket chain. Coop Mobile products are accessible to small budgets and users with low Internet consumption needs. A basic package based on the Swisscom network, Coop Mobile allows unlimited calls and SMS messages throughout Switzerland.
What sets Coop Mobile apart and makes it competitive with other operators is the fact that unused mobile Internet data is retained and carried forward each month, with no accumulation limit. If, for example, you’ve only used 2 GB out of 4 GB for one month, the remaining 2 GB will be added to the following month’s data, giving you 6 GB of mobile internet data available.
This system of carrying forward and accumulating mobile data on small packages is particularly well suited to occasional users.

Digitial Republic subscriptions – Unlimited mobile Internet at low prices
Digital Republic has launched a new concept in Switzerland: a subscription specifically for mobile Internet. You can choose between several formulas:
- Two formulas designed for connected objects that don’t require a lot of bandwidth for 4 and 6 francs a month.
- Two formulas at 10 and 20 francs per month, adapted to web browsing for smartphones and tablets, ideal for those who use the web a lot and only communicate with facebook messenger, telegram or whatsapp.
- Two premium formulas at 30 and 40 francs per month, offering the highest bandwidth and adapted to professional use (from 300 Mbit/S to 2 Gbit/s). This is a very competitive offer, since it’s possible to get very fast 5G speeds comparable to fiber with a simple sim card router.
In any case, you won’t be locked into a web-only subscription, as it’s possible to get unlimited SMS and calls for an extra 10 francs a month. Another advantage is that you can change your options at any time from your online account.
Network quality is very good, as Digital Republic uses the Sunrise network.

Swiss border package by RED
There’s nothing more special than a cross-border commuter. And SFR understands that. The RED by SFR cross-border package gives you 15 GB of data throughout Switzerland (but also abroad, in the French overseas departments, Andorra, the United States, Canada and the countries of the European Union) on the SFR mobile network. Calls, SMS and MMS are also free and unlimited to and from all these destinations. So there’s no roaming problem! For €17 a month, the package also includes 60 GB of data for use anywhere in mainland France. All with no commitment.
There are some very attractive mobile offers in Switzerland, but nothing like the rock-bottom prices posted by our French neighbors (SFR, Bouygues, Orange…). In 2012, Free shook up the telephony market with its €2/month subscription. Like Red by SFR, other brands such as Sosh (with its unpronounceable slogan: “When are you switching to Sosh?”) have developed even more competitive offers. This is a real challenge for our French friends, who are often surprised by Swiss prices.
Be warned, however: opting for a package from SFR, Bouygues or Free will prevent you from having a Swiss number, which can be restrictive in certain situations.

How do I choose the right cell phone subscription in Switzerland?
Cheap, unlimited calls, SMS and MMS, 4G/5G internet access throughout the country, right up to Andorra… that’s what you’d expect from a good Natel subscription. But value for money is hard to come by when you consider that there are over 35 telephone operators in Andorra alone! Finally, there’s no shortage of special situations: many cross-border commuters sail between France and Switzerland. Here are a few tips to help you in your search.
Identify your DATA needs
Your mobile data needs depend on how you use your phone. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What do you use your mobile phone for?
- Check email?
- Watch videos?
- Find an address using GPS?
- Play online games?
- Watch YouTube videos?
- Only make calls?
- Watch series on Netflix?
For simple consultations (emails, internet searches), you don’t need unlimited internet on your mobile. A simple package of between 5 and 10 GB is all you need. Beyond 20 GB, we recommend you opt for a package with unlimited Internet in Switzerland. If in doubt, take a look at your previous invoices. You’ll find a detailed breakdown of your data consumption.
Another way to find out how much data you need is to log in to your subscriber area! Nowadays, most operators allow you to monitor your data consumption directly. This means you can track your consumption day by day and identify your data needs via the operator’s website or a dedicated application.
Choosing your network: the importance of your location
Switzerland is one of the world’s most advanced countries in terms of communications networks. In fact, it was one of the first countries to test the rollout of 5G on its territory. Nevertheless, coverage is not the same everywhere. When choosing your subscription, remember to take into account your geographical location (urban area, deep countryside…).
In towns and cities, the network and bandwidth are of sufficiently good quality to dispense with a box subscription. Opt for a package with unlimited Internet on your mobile, so you can share the Internet connection on your other devices. Economical and terribly clever!
The magic of “no commitment”: easily change operator without losing your number
With the principle of portability (portability is the right to keep your phone number, whether fixed or mobile), it’s easy to keep your number. With no commitment (or a minimum one-month commitment), you’re free to change operators as you wish, while keeping your precious number. How do you go about it? All you have to do is notify your new package provider. When you sign up for a new subscription, simply tell them that you’d like to keep your current number. The new operator will take care of portability and terminate your old contract. Magic, isn’t it?
Is it necessary to have unlimited SMS and MMS in Switzerland?
Once again, it all depends on how you communicate. Generally speaking, and even though we’re increasingly using social media to communicate (via roaming or WiFi) in Switzerland and abroad, we don’t need unlimited data on our cell phones.
Today, most providers automatically offer this package (unlimited calls, SMS and multimedia messages), regardless of the type of subscription. Even if you don’t have an extremely heavy usage of calls in Switzerland, we still recommend that you take out a subscription that includes this offer. If you’ve used up all your Internet data, this option will be particularly useful in an emergency.
Last but not least, unlimited calls will cover you against any overages. Better safe than sorry. If you opt for a package with limited calls, SMS and MMS, remember to check your usage regularly. Telephone operators make it very easy to access this type of information from their mobile application, or in just a few clicks from your subscriber area on their website.
5G: should I change my mobile plan?
Not all mobile packages offer 5G. At the time of writing, 5G is being rolled out across Switzerland. So 4G still has a decade or so to live! If you want to surf at 5G speed, it’s also important to consider the capacity of your smartphone.
Not all mobile phones are compatible with 5G technology. If your mobile is already a few years old, it may not be compatible. It’s easy to check from your smartphone’s settings, on the merchant site or directly with an advisor.
Is it free to change my mobile phone plan?
Changing your cell phone plan is free if, and only if, you’re not already committed to your previous operator. One call to your previous operator may be enough to cancel your plan and switch to your new one. In some cases, even if you are committed, your new operator may be able to cover your termination costs. Just ask!
To identify an offer without commitment on Suisso-Romand.ch, these are packages where the commitment is for one month. Your only obligation is to pay a one-month subscription fee, after which you are free to subscribe to another offer.
Un peu d’histoire !
In Switzerland, the term “Natel” refers to the cell phone. In 1975, Switzerland introduced its first cell phone network for vehicles. It was the Natel C. Thanks to it, it was possible to make calls while driving and thus be mobile throughout Switzerland (or almost). Twenty years later, the privatization of the telecommunications market has left the giant Swisscom as sole owner of the Natel brand. Despite the passage of time and legislation prohibiting the use of telephones while driving, the expression Natel has become sufficiently popularized to remain part of everyday language in French-speaking Switzerland.
Changing rate plan while keeping your old number
It’s perfectly possible to keep your number despite changing your mobile package. Portability is practical, easy and quick to set up, but you still need to pay close attention. Depending on the type of package you’ve subscribed to, portability does not work in the same way. The first thing to check is the length of your commitment. If your package includes a minimum commitment period, you’ll have to wait until the end of this period to be able to switch to a new offer without incurring additional costs.
Of course, it’s possible to change package without waiting, but you’ll have to pay termination fees that vary according to the package. To find out if you’re obliged, check your contract or ask your telephone operator directly. Keeping your mobile number is very practical. So it’s only natural to want to keep it, especially if you’ve had the same one for several years! If you want to keep your mobile number and change your package, don’t forget to inform the new operator of your wish.
FAQ
How can I change mobile operator without changing my number in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, it's easy to change mobile operator while keeping your cell phone number. There is a procedure for this called "number portability". The mobile operator is obliged to transfer the number to the new operator as soon as the subscriber requests it.
How do I request mobile number portability in Switzerland?
Portability of an existing telephone number must be requested from the new mobile operator. When a new mobile package contract is signed, the subscriber must request portability from the new operator. The new operator takes charge of the procedure, requesting the transfer of the cell phone number from the old operator.
How long does it take to port a cell phone number in Switzerland?
The average delay for a mobile number portability procedure is 3 to 5 days.
What is roaming?
Roaming, also known as international roaming, is an option included in some mobile packages. It allows users to continue using their cell phone when traveling abroad. The package may include roaming at the same price, or with additional billing based on data usage.
What does "Internet GB" mean for a mobile package?
The term "GB" stands for gigabyte and refers to the amount of mobile data that can be used to surf the Internet with a mobile package.
What can I do with 1 GB of Internet?
1 GB of mobile internet data is not a lot. Posting a photo on facebook or instagram consumes between 1 and 5 megabytes per photo. Listening to music on spotify consumes around 45 MB of internet data per hour. Using instant messaging services such as whatsapp, discord or facebook consumes an average of 10MB per hour, which can be multiplied by the use of media such as gif files. Streaming on twitch at 480p quality consumes an average of 500 MB per hour. A single movie streamed on netflix consumes at least 1GB.
Can I cancel before the end of the commitment period?
Cancellation during the commitment period is possible. However, mobile package contracts require you to pay the full monthly instalments until the end of the commitment period. You can change your mobile package, but you'll actually be paying for two mobile packages: the old one until the end of the commitment period, and the new one.
What is an eSIM?
